Takoyaki Cooking Tips - Otafuku Style
Takoyaki is one of Japan’s most iconic street foods—crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and filled with tender octopus. If you’ve ever visited Osaka, you’ve probably noticed Takoyaki shops on almost every corner.
While Takoyaki is a popular street snack, it’s also easy and fun to make at home with friends or family. In this article, we’re sharing simple Takoyaki cooking tips to help you get started and enjoy your Takoyaki journey with confidence.
Takoyaki Cooking Tips
-
Oil the pan
Generously brush oil into each mold of the Takoyaki pan. This helps the batter cook evenly and prevents sticking, making flipping much easier. -
Pour the batter
Pour the batter into each mold, filling it almost to the rim while leaving a little room so it doesn’t overflow. -
Add the fillings
Add diced octopus, green onions, pickled red ginger, and tenkasu (tempura bits) to each mold. -
Start heating the pan
Turn on the heat after adding the fillings. This gives you extra time to place everything neatly before the batter begins to cook. -
Pour more batter
Add more batter until it slightly overflows the molds, allowing the surface to connect across the pan. -
Cut the edges as they set
Once the batter starts to firm up, use skewers to cut and separate each piece. -
Flip and cook
Flip the Takoyaki while the surface is still lightly cooked—this is the key to achieving perfectly round Takoyaki that are fluffy on the inside. Continue turning until they’re golden brown and crispy on the outside. -
Serve and top
Transfer to a plate and finish with Otafuku Takoyaki Sauce, mayonnaise, aonori (seaweed flakes), and bonito flakes.
